Top 5 Canvas Webtoons

As a fan of manhwas and webcomics I have searched around and tried most of the websites/apps that post them. My two favorites are definitely Webtoon and Tapas. Today, I want to highlight the Top 5 Canvas Webtoons that make my heart flutter. “What is Canvas?” you may ask.

Canvas is a platform on Webtoon where creators can self-publish their webcomics and try to gain an audience. If they’re lucky they will be noticed by Webtoon, invited to become a Webtoon Original series, and get paid for posting their wonderful stories.

Since they are currently self-published, most of the creators have Patreon accounts available for those who want and are able to support them. Of course, there are hundreds of amazing creators on Webtoon Canvas. Even so, in my personal opinion, these five are the cream of the crop. So without further ado, let’s begin!

Features: Action, Slowburn Romance, Super In-depth World Building, OP Female Lead, Comedy

Bound by Silver: Eternal Fate is an action-packed story with loveable characters that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Set in a world where an ancient war left descendants of the warrior clans (known for their superhuman abilities) with one of two options. Either join the conquering kingdom and become their dogs, or be destroyed. Those who “chose” to be loyal to the kingdom were forced to join an elite group of enforcers. These “Disgraced Beasts” as they were called made normal humans tremble in fear. Those few who survived without being enslaved became known as “misfits”.

Kanae, our heroine, is descended from the strongest warrior clan. She believes in a warrior’s honor and would do anything to help her friend… Including publicly busting her friend’s lover out of prison and helping them escape. Unfortunately, this gets a bounty placed on her head and is the beginning of Kanae’s troubles.

While trying to keep a low profile, Kanae stumbles across the person most desperate to catch her. Ryuzo, the captain of the disgraced beasts and the only other person even close to her power level. However, Ryuzo doesn’t intend to give Kanae to the kingdom. Love, laughter, and balancing personal morals with the realities of a cruel and dark world await as Kanae tries to find if there is anywhere she truly belongs.

Features: Mini Comics, Heartwarming Moments, Giggles Galore

Tori and Samuel is a true delight.  A collection of short comics featuring Tori, an exuberant but somewhat ditzy corgi and Samuel, a logical neat freak cat. Each episode is filled with lighthearted fun and hilarious situations. Yet sprinkled within the humor are some genuinely heartwarming and uplifting moments.

If you are ever feeling overwhelmed, I definitely recommend catching up on Tori and Samuel. Not only will it make you smile, it may just show you that others are going through a similar difficult situation. And there is hope for you to reach the other side.

Features: Adorable Pupper, Slowburn Romance, Relatable Female Lead, Introverted Male Lead

Golden Hour is a sweet, slow-paced webtoon about a devoted dog owner, a pessimistic but reluctantly kind line cook, and how their worlds slowly merge.

Lydia is a successful freelance photographer with the cutest, most adorkable Golden Retriever, Simba. One day Lydia trusted Simba with her boyfriend while she went to a photo shoot. Because of her boyfriend’s negligence, Simba got his leash off and promptly took off.

Simba’s wandering leads him to a new friend named Remi who is not exactly on board with their new “best friend” status. Thanks to Simba facilitating their meeting, Lydia learns that Remi needs a new living arrangement. As luck would have it, she just so happens to be in the market for a roommate.

Golden Hour is filled with adorable moments of doggy fluff that make you squeal in glee. Oh. And there’s the two humans in Simba’s life slowly getting closer to each other. But we all know that Simba is the true star of this story 😉
If you’re in the mood for a sweet story with healthy communication, relatable characters, and beautiful art, then this is the webtoon for you.

Features: Journey of Healing, Slice of Life, Slowburn Romance, Unique and Diverse Characters

Ray of Sunshine is a beautiful, thought-provoking story about several characters coming together to heal from various traumas.

The story follows Reiya who witnesses her twin sister’s death and struggles with depression and overwhelming grief. Encouraged by her kind childhood friend, she leaves the city with all its reminders of her sister and temporarily moves to a quaint mountain village.

Reiya meets a colorful group of new friends and rekindles a forgotten passion for photography. As she gets closer to the village locals she discovers that everyone has challenges (both physical and emotional) that they deal with. Yet Crescent Valley is filled with opportunities for everyone to accept their circumstances and try to move on.

Relseiyy is a master at exploring deep and sometimes difficult topics such as grief, guilt, and emotional trauma. Factor in the stunning, emotionally evocative artwork and you have a masterpiece before you that will have you wishing for every character to find happiness.

Features: Slice of Life, Slowburn Romance, Sports Theme (Judo)

The Gentle Way is a wonderful blend of humor, self-discovery, and the journey of two hearts opening to someone that brings out the best in them.

Jun Ishihara is about as timid and non-confrontational as a person can be. Yet she desperately wants to be like her older sister, a star Judoka. Besides her timidity, Jun also has some deep-rooted trauma concerning the randori (sparring) aspect of judo.

Just when she thinks she’ll never get over her fears, she is saved by a random passerby who uses a picture-perfect judo throw to stop a drunk from attacking her. Jun believes that this brave stranger could be the answer to her problems. She is determined to get him to teach her how to be a true Judoka.

Unfortunately, Mr. Hoodie wants nothing to do with judo and refuses to teach her… but he can’t quite refuse her request to stick close to him. A friendship blossoms between the two who on the surface couldn’t be more different. As they get closer they might find a way to heal the hurt they’ve both experienced in their pasts and move forward to face their fears.

And there you have it! These five Canvas Webtoons have stories that wind themselves into my mind and heart and just won’t let go. Plus they each have a unique and beautiful art style that I adore. I hope you’ll give each of them a try! If you have some spare time, I highly recommend exploring the Canvas section of Webtoon. Who knows? You may find your new favorite story.

P.S. I didn’t realize this until I started the list, but 4 of the 5 of my recommendations all feature a cute doggo:

From Left to Right: Tori from Tori and Samuel, Simba from Golden Hour, Freddie from Ray of Sunshine, Mugen from The Gentle Way

Do I love these stories because they have a delightfully adorable pupper? Or do the creators I admire most just happen to be dog lovers? I’m not sure, but it was an interesting commonality.😋 Thanks for reading! Have a fluttery day
